BUSHkids Annual Report 2018-2019

WHS

Safety of clients, volunteers and staff is foremost in current and future planning

As Bushkids expands and extends our operational footprint across Queensland, the often-repeated phrase that Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) is indispensable in securing the wellbeing of everyone involved has never been truer, augmented by our solid foundation of policies, procedures and safety induction programs.

Risk Assessments 2019

During FY/2018–19 alone, more than 80 WHS Inductions have been given to new staff and volunteers across the organisation. In these sessions the Maintenance and Safety Coordinator explains the very important role of the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) and who that person is within BUSHkids. The PCBU’s primary duty of care is to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all workers, volunteers, students, clients and visitors, by:  ensuring WHS policies and procedures are in place and are met  providing a safe working environment  providing reliable resources and equipment  creating safe systems of work  providing training instruction and supervision  consulting with workers on WHS matters. The Maintenance and Safety Coordinator meets weekly with the PCBU to discuss WHS matters including incident reports. WHS issues are regularly brought to the Leadership Team meetings for discussion. These may be issues or concerns raised by the regional teams during regular Case Management Meetings (CMMs); the Maintenance and Safety Coordinator will often contact WorkCover Queensland for guidance and to ensure clarity of understanding and implementation. Risk Assessments and incidents remain a crucial WHS focus: detailed learnings continuously inform our mitigation steps and prevention strategies. This year we provided SunSmart shirts for all the frontline teams, the stylish long-sleeved attire’s UPF 50+ rating providing practical protection attending outdoor events and conducting playgroup sessions and excursions. BUSHkids Council also agreed to cover the cost of the flu vaccination this year, and many staff took up the offer to help protect themselves — particularly frontline staff working with vulnerable children and their families. We continue to be vigilant across the WHS spectrum to keep our staff secure in all their roles across Queensland and help ensure the safety of our volunteers, visitors and clients.
