BUSHkids Annual Report 2019-20

ANNUAL REPORT 2019–2020

Training

BUSHkids is committed to developing the capability of our staff through training, providing them opportunities to develop their careers and enabling us to offer a wide range of quality programs for our client kids and families. We provide a range of evidence-based group program training sessions in-house. New staff are given a comprehensive induction and are trained in a variety of programs to provide a good foundational knowledge for family-centred practice. Although COVID-19 restricted F2F (face-to-face) training this year it also presented new opportunities for non-clinical staff to undertake Read and Grow training and to take part in our highly popular Virtual Storytime sessions. More than 140 training courses were successfully completed by BUSHkids staff across seven client-facing group programs:

As well as supporting opportunities for external professional development (PD) , we also have a commitment to a strong internal PD program and our ‘Lunchbox Learning’ (LBL) forms a key part of this approach. Staff gather across the state for an hour once a fortnight over lunch and engage via video-conferencing. Topics identified by the Leads of the various disciplines, via supervision, staff surveys and other modes are a chance to draw on the skills and knowledge of our own staff, as well as that of external speakers.

LBL sessions are also recorded for our shared drive, building an extensive library for our staff to access at any time. Each LBL is also evaluated as part of BUSHkids’ quality improvement process and feedback indicates that the LBL sessions continue to be very well received by staff and regarded as valuable adjuncts to their PD. The events of Summer 2019-20 and life with the pandemic since then called for some additional LBL topics this year and sessions covering disasters, COVID-19 and Virtual Storytime training were included.
