RUTH MAGAZINE REPORT Jan Ross

Subscribers will pay $7.95 per copy, or $6.95 for QCWA member subscriptions. Subscriber numbers are sitting at around 500 at present. Renewed efforts by News Corp in the promotion of QCWA’s Ruth through its widespread networks will see a lift in figures as we go forward. The magazine’s production, until recently with News Corp, will relocate layout and production back to Toowoomba where there will be more control over the timing and the proofreading, avoiding scheduling issues and any last-minute bottlenecks which may eventuate. The year has proved interesting and rewarding and I thank my fellow Committee members — State President Christine King, Alison Alexander, Jane Milburn and Tamara Stevenson — for their considered input into the discussions at the table each quarter. QCWA Ruth is a publication of which members of our Association can be extremely proud: long may it continue to give pleasure to the readers and financially support QCWA in the vitally important work we do.

The QCWA Ruth magazine year to date has become far more assured with a new contract signed by QCWA and News Corp and in place from the 2019 Winter edition. This new contract takes away any risk from the QCWA with a publishing fee of $4,000 paid to QCWA each edition: this is a small, assured income stream for our Association, something we have aspired to for some time. During the year a reader survey was conducted with overwhelmingly positive results. The majority of Ruth readers are women aged 50 years or over — not a bad thing as women of this age group are not an easily-reached audience, especially for advertisers. Readers loved stories about ‘ordinary’ but inspirational women, as well as art-and-crafts, homes, gardens, food and fashion; books, new products, events and puzzles rated well too. Many would like to read more on health, food and pets, as well as agriculture, farming and the environment. These requests have been heeded for future editions. After some six years a price rise was warranted and from the Ruth 2019 Spring edition the retail price will be $8.95. The magazine sells in news- agents throughout Queensland, and New South Wales as far South as Sydney.
