Our History From his humble beginnings in a small building workshop, Werner von Siemens constructed his first pointer telegraph. However, possibly Werner’s most significant achievement in electrical engineering was the discovery of the dynamo-electric principle, establishing the idea that electricity could be used as a power source. By the late 19th century Siemens became known worldwide for our ability to handle technically complex and extremely high-risk projects such as building the China Indo-European telegraph line from London to Calcutta. In 1872, Siemens expanded to Australia, supplying the entire range of equipment for the construction of the 2,700 kilometre telegraph line between Adelaide and Darwin. Now, 165 years on, Siemens is represented in more than 190 countries and is one of the most comprehensive technology companies. As an inventor and visionary entrepreneur, Werner von Siemens was influential in the development of the electrical industry. Since the first Siemens agency was established in 1892 in Australia and in 1923 in New Zealand, Siemens has grown to enjoy a strong presence in the Pacific region with approximately 2,300 employees. There are few industrial corporations that can look back on such a long history of success as we can.
