Built at a time when the number of funnels was coming into vogue as an indication of power (for prestige North Atlantic liners, four stacks came to be de rigeur even if the ship’s powerplant required only three) it is interesting to note the differences in appearance of the Pacific Princes over time: the forward funnel appears to be an appearance-enhancing ‘dummy’ in these postcard comparisons between Bremen (left) and Madang (above).
