QUEENSLAND'S GERMAN CONNECTIONS - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
“The best wurst in town” Imbiss Richard Windt was born “We had to look hard to find someone who
in Australia but raised in Germany, where he met his bride Monika, and together they ventured Down Under in 1999 for an extended tour of the Fifth Continent. When you stop to consider all the wonders of our island nation you might ask why the pair pined so much for the familiar Wurst of Germany; readers who have forked into an authentic Berliner Currywurst in that city, or enjoyed a Senf (mustard) covered Bratwurst on a fresh hot Brötchen in the centre of Hannover, will understand why. “We wondered how many more people would feel the same?” mused Monika, after they returned to Germany; not only did they prepare to emigrate, they came charged with the vision to bring that taste of home with them. In 2002, after finding their feet with Richard’s family in Melbourne, the pair arrived in Southeast Queensland – and hit the local market scene “with a little money, a tent, a German grill, homemade Sauerkraut and a float” – travelling the rounds of Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, working hard and winning customers with their ‘mobile sausage hut’.
could supply the genuine sausages we love from back home,” Richard said, “and even the idea of our beautiful Brötchen (rolls) was unheard-of out here, but other people put us in contact with Adam’s Continental Smallgoods and we haven’t looked back since.” After eight years building a reputation and loyal following at community markets in the southeast, Richard and Monika took the plunge in 2010 and opened their very own, fixed-location, “Imbiss” (in Germany and other parts of Europe, the name is well-known as ‘snack’ or ‘light meal’) in the heart of Brisbane’s Central Business District. Encouraged by Brisbane City Council’s ‘Vibrant Laneways’ program, the pair established a very German little home in Burnett Lane, gained a liquor licence, an extended menu, and the chance to focus on further development of the business. “Our ‘express counter’ is very popular with city office workers,” says Monika, “but it’s our Friday evening ‘Pork Hock Night’ which has really
taken-off – it’s a good idea to make a booking for a real German meal.”
