QUEENSLAND'S GERMAN CONNECTIONS - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Advancing next generation researchers through study exchange To keep pace with advancing research collaboration, pathways to research from undergraduate and post- graduate studies between QUT and its German partners are expanding, and include mobility opportunities. Exposing students to research knowledge and ethics is common from first year through to doctoral studies within many QUT courses with students exposed to successful Australia-Germany partnerships across the 10 QUT engineering disciplines, science, and information technology degrees. Internship opportunities are available through key research and industry organisations in various locations in Germany including Fraunhofer IAO + (Stuttgart), BMW (Munich) and Hochtief, holding company for Australian construction company, Thiess. The Hochtief internship is offered as part of an integrated exchange framework with QUT partner RWTH Aachen. Since 2009, some 30 QUT Science, Engineering and Built Environment students have undertaken exchange studies in Germany. Stuttgart is a popular destination, especially for aerospace avionics and civil engineering students, who have the opportunity to undertake studies with Universität Stuttgart. BMW in Munich provides internships to QUT engineering and design students to advance their skills in sustainable design and manufacturing. This provides industry experience with a world-leading industry giant to both undergraduate and postgraduate coursework and research students. Doctoral students within the biomedical field have extensive opportunities to work with pre-eminent supervisors and they gain access to world-standard research facilities through the strong collaboration between internationally-renowned medical engineering researchers at QUT, including Professor Michael Schütz and Professor Dietmar Hutmacher, and leading institutions Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Charité– Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin and TU Dresden. Further opportunities to undertake research within the framework of an international joint doctoral program continue to grow with key German partners.
