QUEENSLAND'S GERMAN CONNECTIONS - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Discovering statehood

Above: This undated ink-and-wash map of Leichhardt’s first expedition was prepared by Captain Samuel Perry, Deputy Surveyor-General of the colony of New South Wales from 1829, under Sir Thomas Mitchell. Left and below: Differing interpretations of statehood by an unnamed 1860 cartographer (below) and the world-respected New York map maker Colton (left) in 1855-56. The map below more accurately de picts Australia at the start of that decade, the faint magenta line following the Murray River suggesting Port Phillip District’s coloniol status (1851) is imminent. Colton’s rather arbitrary delineation of ‘Northern Australia’ perhaps reflects the uncertainties and delays in Moreton Bay’s application to London for similar recognition.
