RQYS MAINSHEET 2024
A zodiac of rising stars
Lucas Patrick and Luke Rogers at the 29er Worlds
Queensland’s Batten Trophy-winning ILCA team
Our sailors in the: 29er (2nd at Nationals, 10th at Worlds),
470 (3rd at Sail Sydney), Nacra15 (1st at Nationals), ILCA (3rd at Kiel Week – among other big regattas!), Finns (1st at Nationals) and iQFoil classes (competing at the Palma, Hyeres and Embrun (5th in U19) regattas) … … are only a few where our OTB (Off-The-Beach) sailors have been internationally outstanding.

The Squadron also hosted major National regattas in January including the Flying 11 Nationals and the OK Nationals and Worlds — all fantastic regattas, so kudos to our Race Management and Volunteer teams. In the Brisbane to Keppel “Go Troppo” race, “Balancing Act” took Handicap honours while “Alive” (an RP66 sailing two-handed!) took Line Honours. Squadron sailors also competed in the classic Rolex Sydney Hobart with five RQYS-registered boats competing and member Duncan Hine skippering the winning Line Honours boat Alive . At home, our Academy is going from strength to strength with more than 100 sailors in our Youth Squad, and our coaching for Masters and keelboat sailors also popular. A new match racing group has been formed, training in the Elliott 6s with the aim of competing in regional and national match race regattas. All in all a busy year and we look forward to more success in 2025 with the Squadron hosting the ILCA Oceania and National Championships, Optimist Nationals and, in 2026, the Finn Gold Cup.

To cap all this off, Rafael ‘Rafa’ Trujillo, one of our Finn sailors and an Australian Sailing (AS) National Coach, was awarded “Coach of the Year” at the AS Annual Awards!
