Finns’ flood tide

The Squadron has a long and proud history with the International Finn Class going back to the early 1950s, curiously, with ebbs and flows of popularity broadly aligned with quarter-century-long tides of Olympic interest! The late Bill Warlow (current Finn sailor Commodore John Warlow’s father) sailed a Finn and competed for selection in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games along with other prominent Members including Ron Jenyns and John Ferguson. Ron won the Queensland Championships a record 12 times between 1959 and 1971, John winning four times between 1971–1976. Ron won the Australian Championships a record 10 times and represented Australia in the Finn Class at the 1960,1964 and 1968 Olympics. In 1976 Kerry Waraker, then a keen Finn sailor and National Secretary, won the Queensland Championships before the ‘Finns tide’ at RQYS ebbed from 1978 to 2014; once again rising since then, ahead of 2032 here in Brisbane. n
