FLYING 11s 2021 State Championships Despite several challenges, writes Mick Patrick, an abridged Youth Week and Flying 11 State titles were held over Sunday 4th and Monday 5th July.

Day One was a long and somewhat frustrating day on the water with the first two races having to be abandoned in a light and fickle southwesterly. After a long postponement waiting for the light afternoon easterly to fill in, three races were able to be run – and all three were won by the Patrick brothers (Lucas and Zachary) on Firefly, closely followed by Sam and Mia on Strictly Confidentia l and Jasper and Amy on Odyssey in turn. Day Two welcomed the sailors with chilly morning and what hinted to be similar conditions to the day before. Race 4 got away in a light southwesterly and was won by the boys on Firefly , but the team on Strictly Confidential hustled well in the building westerly to win heats 5 and 6 and was the well-deserved Boat of the Day. Overall, the Firefly team was able to hang on and win the event by just two points over a strong finishing crew on Strictly Confidential .

Thanks to the parents (especially Muir’s for loaning the marquee) and volunteers, and to the RQYS officials for running the event, and our generous sponsors – Vaikobi , Liros , CST Composites and Allen – for the great prizes for our sailors.

Special mention goes to the young sister and brother combination of Chloe and Jack Barrett for their first regatta together – and on Chloe wining first female skipper. Well done to all sailors!
