POWER CRUISING GROUP 2021 Round-up

The group took frequent inclement weather and COVID lockdowns and restrictions in its stride, reports Chair John Higgins, with cruises-in-company – often with Sail Cruising group compatriots – as far afield as the Bremer River, Bundaberg and Bowen.

GROUPS

The regular cruising year started with our Australia Day cruise to our outstation at Canaipa for fun and games between the Power and Sail Cruising Groups, including cricket, thong- throwing and the traditional tug-of-war, all punctuated with much food and drink!

In February, eight boats cruised up to Scarborough as guests of the Moreton Bay Boat Club. March saw our Club Navigation Myora Cup event with some 22 boats competing for the coveted trophy. Our regular trip to Bribie Island (Mission Point) was cancelled due to weather, but our Anzac weekend cruise to the Little Ship Club on the shore of the One Mile at Dunwich (North Stradbroke Island) and the dawn service was well attended.

The highlight was the combined Sail and Power Groups’ “Cruise North in Company” trip where some 30 boats headed up to the K’gari (Fraser) Coast, Hervey Bay, the southern Barrier Reef islands and the Keppels. Many headed further north to the Whitsundays, with some attending the Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club’s “Shaggers” event at Cape Gloucester near Bowen – an annual prostate cancer fundraiser gathering – or extending their stay in the region.
