FEATURE • WoW!

My name is Sammie Costin and I’m a Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and Australian Sailing Futures windfoil athlete, campaigning for the 2024 Olympics in the new IQ Foil class. My sailing journey started at a very young age, after being introduced to the sport through my Dad. From the moment I could hold onto a rope I was constantly involved in the club’s junior sailing initiatives and was an very regular face at Sail and Play during my school holidays. Through the Green Fleet program, I began sailing the Optimist, which helped foster my love for racing, training and just floating around the bay. After taking a break from sailing during high school, I took up wind- surfing in 2017 through the Windsurfing Centre of Excellence. In 2018, I represented Australia on the RS:X at the Hempel Sailing World Championships and European Championships before moving to the foil in early 2020. That year I was fortunate enough to finish 1st female at the Dowunder Pro Australian Windfoil Championships and was selected as a Training Partner for the QAS. With their support, and that of RQYS and the growing local foiling fleet I was able to perform at a number of regattas throughout the year before finishing 1st Female at Sail Sydney and ultimately securing a spot on the Australian Sailing Futures Squad.

My goals are to continue to train hard, help build the windfoiling fleet locally and nationally, and keep working towards qualification and selection for the Olympics.
