Women on Water (WoW!)

FEATURE

Irrespective of the 2021 Sydney-to-Hobart race outcome, skippering her own boat back down to and up the home waters of the Derwent is a compelling incentive for VICTORIA LOGAN.

“We just did well consistently,” she said with some modesty. Both are still members of the Bellerive Yacht Club (BYC) and Brent, in recalling that, between them, they “had that boat humming” also pays tribute to his partner’s demonstrable skills. “Victoria is a great sailor,” says Brent, “and rig driver, rig trimmer etc – she’s great on all positions.”

With Queenslander partner Brent – for whom it was an equally swift bond on discovering that, as well as them both working in the construction industry they shared a love of boats and sailing – they “did a fair bit of offshore sailing and racing” in the reborn vessel. “We won the 2019 Victorian titles in the Div.2 Twilights in ‘Breakaway’, ” is Victoria’s succinct summary.

Victoria has been sailing since the age of 12, initially on her parents’ 28-footer out of Hobart, before buying an Adams 12 eight years ago which turned out to be something of a ‘renovator’s delight’. “It ended up being a full refit,” Victoria recalls, with the kind of reflective smile with which those of us who’ve ‘been- there-done-that’ can instantly identify.
