WELCOME TO SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND
Southern Queensland is an undiscovered region on the Queensland coast with an abundant range of attractions for visitors to revel in, both onshore and on the water. Its sub-tropical climate makes it an appealing destination to visit all year round. The Southern Queensland Superyacht Guide provides key information for superyachts planning on visiting the region. Defined here as the coast and hinterlands from Gladstone in the Southern Great Barrier Reef to Coolangatta on the Gold Coast near the New South Wales border, these six different regions each offer their
Arriving in Queensland
own distinctive attractions and diverse ranges of activities to enjoy. Southern Queensland is ready to receive visiting superyachts and can deliver some truly unique experiences when cruising this undiscovered coast.
Welcome to Southern Queensland!
Southern Great Barrier Reef Arrive at Gladstone in the north as the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef’s almost untouched islands, then cruise south through the Discovery Coast towns of 1770 and Agnes Water, with the northernmost surf beaches on Australia’s east coast. Or choose Bundaberg, home of the iconic rum distillery as well as the famous Mon Repos turtle encounters, and with easy access to the ex-HMAS Tobruk dive wreck – there is little this region does not offer. F raser Coast A short distance further south is Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast. Fraser Island, the World Heritage wonder and largest sand island on the planet, is one of the most remarkable wilderness islands on earth with freshwater lakes and rainforests thousands of years old. Also famous for its intimate whale-watching encounters and the Great Sandy Straits Marine Park, this entire coast delivers memorable experiences like no other. Sunshine Coast The Sunshine Coast centres of Noosa and Mooloolaba both have adventurous hinterlands to explore. Famous Noosa Main Beach is accompanied by high-end boutiques and award-winning restaurants all within easy reach. Mooloolaba offers access to the nearby attractions of the ex-HMAS Brisbane dive wreck and ashore to Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo and the Glass House Mountains for waterfalls, wide landscape views and rainforest trails. Moreton Bay On the doorstep of the Queensland capital is Moreton Bay and Moreton Island, with quiet idyllic anchorages for some down time on the deserted beaches. North Stradbroke Island, second in size only to Fraser Island, offers yet more swimming, snorkelling and surfing, as well as a rich Indigenous heritage to explore. Among the Bay’s hundreds of islands, its sparkling waters are home to often-seen dugongs, turtles and dolphins.
Brisbane Upriver to Brisbane, the cosmopolitan state capital with
sunny riverside marinas and attractions that offer stunning views of the city. Visitors to Brisbane can explore quirky laneways and tucked-away rooftop bars ready with chilled sunset cocktails, and savour South Bank for world-class art exhibitions featuring both Indigenous and international contemporary works,
plus live theatre and concerts. Just an hour’s drive from Brisbane is the Scenic Rim hinterland where visitors can enjoy native walking trails, cellar door visits or a retreat experience at a luxury lodge. Brisbane also has some of the most experienced refit and repair yards inthe Asia-Pacific region, accompanied by a range of the most highly- regarded marine service professionals, so it is definitely worth staying longer and enjoying the city. Gold Coast This region needs little introduction, with world- renown beaches such as Main Beach, Burleigh Heads and Surfers Paradise, its host of theme parks, skyscraper hotels, shopping outlets, local markets and other holiday attractions. The Gold Coast hinterland also offers adventurous day visits exploring local national parks. The Gold Coast Marine Precinct at Coomera is a captain’s dream with two of the largest and top-managed refit and repair yards in the Asia-Pacific region and a list of superyacht specialist services between them that other superyacht centres around the world can only envy. Superyachts can elect to arrive in Australia at either appointed or non-appointed ports of entry. WEATHER AND TIDES Southern Queensland coastal areas have a sub-tropical climate making this exciting region an all year-round cruising destination for visiting superyachts. Located below the cyclone belt, the Southern Queensland coast enjoys bright sunny warm days and balmy evenings with only small variations between the summer and winter months and definitely not the seasonal extremes felt in the northern hemisphere! Temperatures Summer Average 29C in the day with lows of 21C overnight. Winter Summer: December to February Hottest months of the year with some humidity and higher rainfall and thunderstorms at times. Autumn: March to May Remaining warm with cooler evenings with less humidity and rain Winter: June to August Generally dry and mild, low humidity, cooler at night Spring: September to November Warm sunny days with some cool sea breezes Prevailing winds The Southern Queensland coastal waters can experience tidal variances over four or more metres in places. For example, Gladstone can have a HAT of 4.83m. Consult the Maritime Safety Queensland website for all information including the Queensland Tide Tables and local information on tidal planes and king tides . msq.qld.gov.au/Tides Summer: Northeasterlies Winter: Southeasterlies Tides Average 22C during the day with lows of 14C overnight. Water temperatures Average range from 25C in the summer to 19C in the winter. Seasons
PILOTAGE REQUIREMENTS All vessels of 50m or more proceeding within a Queensland compulsory pilotage area must either carry a licensed marine pilot or be under the command of a master who holds a Pilotage Exemption Certificate for the area. Compulsory pilotage areas in Southern Queensland are the ports of Gladstone, Bundaberg, Brisbane and Southport (special conditions apply). msq.qld.gov.au/Shipping/Compulsory-pilotage- areas Pilotage areas also exist for the Maryborough / Hervey Bay area and Noosa. Local area chartlets are also available for reference. PROTECTING THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is Australia’s national regulatory body promoting the safety and protection of the Australian marine environment and combat ship-sourced pollution. AMSA also provides the infrastructure for safety of navigation in Australian waters and maintains a national search and rescue service for the maritime and aviation sectors.
Whale migration advice The Southeast Queensland coast is well known for its annual whale migration season, from June to November, as the humpback whales migrate north to warmer waters to calve and then return to the Antarctic later in the year. Whales can be present and sighted up and down the Queensland coast during this time. Whale Migration Advice on observed distances and reporting of any incidents is located under the Notice to Mariners / Southeast Queensland Outside Pilotage Areas . publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/south-east- queensland-outside-pilotage-areas-notices-to- mariners
Australia implements a range of standards and regulations to protect the marine environment from pollution. These regulations ensure Australia meets its international obligations. Visiting vessels to Australia must ensure they comply with these regulations and report marine pollution incidents. GLADSTONE REGION
The Southern Great Barrier Reef is one of the best-kept secrets on the Queensland coast, offering visitors a true discovery experience of this relatively untouched part of the Great Barrier Reef. The region boasts some beautiful natural wonders, including Heron Island, Lady Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island, all only a short distance from the cities of Gladstone and Bundaberg. Gladstone is home to Queensland’s largest multi-commodity shipping port and an active fishing fleet, both servicing the local region and adding to the fame of being the state’s engine room. South of Gladstone, the relaxed seaside towns of 1770 and Agnes Water are linked by a picturesque coastline. Bundaberg too offers easy access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef islands and is also close to the top end of Fraser Island where the humpback whales stop en route south to rest with their newborn calves. Greater Gladstone region
Southern Great Barrier Reef
Gladstone city is surrounded by two rivers, and in between them in the heart of the city lies a natural, deepwater harbour where the Gladstone Ports Corporation and Gladstone Marina are based. The city along with the port and marina are protected by two outlying islands – Curtis Island and Facing Island. Each year in April the harbour plays host to the annual Brisbane-to-Gladstone Yacht Race , marked by the Gladstone Harbour Festival . The marina area has been developed with stunning parklands close by including Spinnaker Park and Palm Point on either side of the marina entrance. They both offer excellent walking trails, cafés plus a swimming beach and great views across the inlet. An easy walk across the waterway is the Gladstone Yacht Club , known for its Sundowners in the Beer Garden right on the waterfront. Further along is the East Shores Precinct , a recreational destination running between the waterfront and Flinders Parade offering relaxed activities for families, an outdoor cinema and other attractions. gladstoneregion.info
The Tondoon Botanic Gardens stand out for being one of the few in Australia with all-native plant species.

REGION
Welcome to the Southern Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is the world’s largest coral reef system, composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for more than 2,300 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres. It is also a World Heritage site and a protected marine park managed by the Australian government through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) ensuring responsible reef practices, administration of activity zones, permits and access details. GBRMPA also acknowledges the traditional owners of the reef. .
gbrmpa.gov.au
gbrmpa.gov.au/our-partners/traditional-owners/traditional-owners-of-the-great-barrier-reef
Superyacht visits to the GBR There is a dedicated Superyacht section on the GRBMPA website called Visiting with a Superyacht located under ‘Planning your visit’. Pre-planning is essential and where you can go is determined by the length of the vessel and whether you are a commercial or recreational vessel. Moorings and anchoring Anchoring is allowed in the Southern Great Barrier Reef in certain areas. Public moorings are available but are limited by vessel length accommodating yachts up to 35m. There is no charge to use the public moorings but there are time limits for usage; typically 24 hours. Consult the general information on Moorings and No- Anchoring areas on the GBRMPA website and from there the e-library documents: Map of the Capricorn and Bunker Group and a brochure on moorings for the Keppels and Capricorn Bunkers . GBRMPA also has a very useful App called Eye on the Reef loaded with easy-to-access information letting you know in which zone your vessel is currently located and the activities permitted in that zone. For the zones in the Southern Great Barrier Reef Islands refer to Map 18 for the Capricorn Bunker Group .
Commercial Vessel Permits If you are providing transport, accommodation or services for tourists, guests or other people who have paid for passage on — or the charter of — the vessel, then you are a commercial superyacht. Commercial superyachts need a permit to operate in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Permits can be applied for online . Recreational vessels Recreational visitors do not require a permit to visit the Marine Park however but it is still important to understand where you can go, the rules and Responsible Reef Practices . Please also be aware of vessels’ responsibilities to the environment . Larger vessels 50m and over Vessels 50m or over are required to participate in the GBR and Torres Strait Vessel Traffic Service (REFFVTS). The service provides shipping traffic information, navigational assistance and safety information to aid onboard decision-making. Contact the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Maritime Safety Queensland for more details. Vessels 70m or longer must carry a licensed pilot in designated compulsory pilotage areas.

SOUTHERN GREAT BARRIER REEF
Discover idyllic islands and coastal towns While many visitors head to northern Queensland to experience the Great Barrier Reef, the Reef extends far south into Southern Queensland where many more idyllic islands wait to be explored.
Heron Island Heron Island is a small coral cay of 29 hectares located just 80km northeast of Gladstone, and lies in the Capricorn Group of islands of the GBR close to the Tropic of Capricorn. Access to the island itself is through the Heron Island Resort via ferry, helicopter and seaplane.
Lady Musgrave Island Part of the Bunker Group of islands, Lady Musgrave Island is the second most southern island in the reef and is the only coral island on the GBR with a navigable lagoon. Although small at only 14 hectares of coral cay, with its 1,192 hectares of surrounding reef it over delivers on both exceptional underwater experiences and tranquil secluded above-water activities. For diving and snorkelling experiences in and around Lady Musgrave Island, secure the services of a local tour operator from either Gladstone or Bundaberg, who can advise vessels on the channel entry and provide local knowledge for the best scuba diving, snorkelling and fishing spots both in and outside the reef. They can also advise on the best anchorage areas inside the reef. Visitors to Lady Musgrave Island can go ashore and enjoy snorkelling off the beach, local birdlife and isolated lazy walks followed by relaxed refreshments on the sand.

Lady Elliot Island Lady Elliot Island is the southernmost coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef, lying 46 nm northeast of Bundaberg, and is also part of the Bunker Island Group. The island is only 46 hectares and is managed by the Lady Elliot Eco-Resort operating privately since 2005 and accessible only by ferry or plane. Departure ports in the region are from Bundaberg, and Hervey Bay on the Fraser Coast. Lady Elliot Island sits within the protected ‘green zone’ of the GBRMP and is known as the ‘Home of the Manta Ray’ for its abundance of manta rays, turtles and over 1,200 other marine life species, due to its easterly location benefiting from the Eastern Australian Current. The diverse corals on the reef surrounding Lady Elliot Island are in excellent condition and divers can enjoy a wonderful mix of hard and soft corals along with the local marine life. Lady Elliot Island also has Master Reef Guides available to visitors.

Town of 1770 and Agnes Water South of Gladstone are the two beachside communities of Seventeen Seventy (1770) and Agnes Water . The town of 1770 is famous for being named after then-Lieutenant James Cook and his crew from the Endeavour who came ashore there on 24 May 1770. The township has built up around Cook’s landing site and celebrates every May with the Captain Cook 1770 Festival . Tours out to Lady Musgrave Island also leave from 1770. Agnes Water operates as the local service town but is more known for its white sandy beaches and for being the most northern surf beach on the east coast of Australia before the Great Barrier Reef. To go ashore, book a friendly local tour operator for a half or full day tour to take guests around the historic sites of 1770 including a relaxed 30-minute walk to the lookout . Finish the day with a refreshing surf at Agnes Water. There is a public jetty for easy tender pick-up and drop-off located just south of the Volunteer Marine Rescue base next to the local marina. Refer to the Discovery Coast Beacon to Beacon Guide for 1770 . Watch the depth here at all times as waters can be shallow.

The historic city of Bundaberg is known as a major sugarcane-growing area and, by extension, for its namesake export: Bundaberg Rum. The Bundaberg region also grows other crops and supplies 25% of the nation’s fresh produce. A city of just 70,000, Bundaberg operates as a gateway for tourism for locally-based attractions, inland national parks and offshore experiences accessing the Southern Great Barrier Reef. It lies on the Burnett River, about 25km inland. Named in the 1860s, Bundaberg is a combination of an Aboriginal term ‘bunda’ and the Anglo-Saxon or German term ‘berg’ for town. The Port of Bundaberg and Bundaberg Port Marina are located at the mouth of the Burnett River, a 15-20 minute drive from the city centre. Bundaberg and beyond
Bundaberg Airport is a domestic airport with flights to Brisbane and regional centres. It is located on the southwestern edge of the city: a 25-minute drive from the marina and a 12-15-minute drive from the city centre.

Wreck diving ex-HMAS Tobruk The former HMAS Tobruk is one of the world’s newest wreck dives, scuttled halfway between Bundaberg and Hervey Bay in the Great Sandy Marine Park in mid-2018. As a former heavylift landing ship, it is much more open than a standard military wreck.
Southern Great Barrier Reef
The wreck is already popular, with marine life having taken up permanent residence, including turtles and rays. It rests in 30m of water, but the shallowest part of the wreck lies in only 10.9m of water, making it easily accessible by Open Water-certified divers. Approved dive operators based in Bundaberg with dive permits for the wreck are Aqua Scuba and Tobruk Experience .

Mon Repos Turtle Centre World-famous Mon Repos Turtle Centre is a must-do when in Bundaberg. The centre is part of the Parks and forests department, located right on the beach and an easy detour from the marina area en route into the city.
Fishing – offshore Some describe the Southern Great Barrier Reef as the pinnacle of Australian angling due to the diversity of the fish species and the range and accessibility of fishing experiences. The Reef is home to amazing species such as coral trout, red emperor, Spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, marlin and sailfish. A number of charter operators with extensive local knowledge of where is best to go on the day offer day trips or longer with If freshwater fishing is preferred, make a visit to some of the local lakes and rivers in and around the Gladstone and Bundaberg area. Lake Awoonga is the place to catch barramundi, with the largest caught weighing in at 36kg! It also is stocked with mangrove jack. Bundaberg’s Lake Monduran also has barramundi where the story goes a world record was broken by someone fishing from a kayak! advance bookings. Fishing – onshore

Whale-watching experiences From July to November, it’s humpback whale-watching season on the east coast of Australia. Many locations offer whale-watching experiences as the whales travel up and back down the coast. The whales, however, actually stop at Fraser Island to rest for a couple of weeks with their calves before starting the final trip south. From Bundaberg, whale-watching tours to Fraser Island are available through Lady Musgrave Experience with direct access almost due east across the top of Hervey Bay to the wide waters of Platypus Bay where the whales rest and play.
