Southern Queensland SUPERYACHT GUIDE
LOCATION / TOPIC
Moreton Island (Mulgumpin)
The Tangalooma Island Resort located about halfway down the island on the Bay side is one of the main attractions as a popular destination for visitors, and is most famous for the dolphins that come to be hand-fed by guests each evening. It also has a pier where the ferry from Pinkenba in the Brisbane River comes in. There are limited, unsealed roads criss-crossing the island between these centres and the coastline so most vehicles are 4WD. Visiting superyachts can enjoy safe protected anchorages on the northern and western side of the island, anchoring in bays off the beaches as the sea floor drops off from about 50-100m from the beachfront. With the untouched pristine waters and so much marine life to explore, the best time to visit is in the winter from April to October with cooler temperatures and the water rarely below 20°C.
Moreton Island is made almost entirely of sand and is the third-largest sand island in the world. It is also home to Mount Tempest which at 285m is considered the highest sand dune in the world. As a coastal environment, it is also one of the most untouched and pure on the southern Queensland coast. visitmoretonisland.com/home As one of the ‘barrier’ islands to the bay, Moreton Island sits within the Moreton Bay Marine Park and its marine park zones which includes conservation, go-slow and no-anchoring areas. There are individual location Marine Park User Maps available on the Moreton Island area. The Moreton Bay Marine Park Guide brochure is also very user friendly on the ‘dos-and-don’ts’ and has an excellent one-page summary map with insets for local areas. parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/moreton-bay/zoning/maps- resources#moreton_bay_marine_park_zoning parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/moreton-bay/zoning/moreton_bay_ marine_park_user_guide_maps parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/163521/ marine-park-guide.pdf Residents of Moreton Island live mainly in the local townships of Bulwer, Cowan Cowan and Kooringal.
