Straddie’s scenic spots

Dunwich Anchoring in or close by Horseshoe Bay on the southern side of Peel Island, take a tender across to North Stradbroke Island for a day trip. Guests can be dropped off and picked up at the One Mile Jetty in Dunwich, approximately 2. 5 nm from Peel Bluff across the channel.

Amity Point Amity Point is known for its mostly quiet, calm waters, which make it a great spot for kayaking and SUPs. It has a pier, a swimming enclosure and adjacent parklands for some shade. Drive north to Amity Point for a late morning snorkel off the beach or a lazy swim in the swimming enclosure next door.

Cylinder Beach Leaving Amity Point, travel across the island about 15km to take in Cylinder Beach and Point Lookout. Cylinder Beach has a long sweeping beach facing northeast and a small cove at the eastern end set between two rocky outcrops. The waves here are often smaller so it is a great spot for swimming. When conditions are right, it is also popular with surfers and lifeguards patrol the beach. In the sheltered cove is a surf school where all ages can safely tackle the waves. Water activities For those keen to snorkel and dive in the local waters in and around North Stradbroke Island, Manta Lodge & Scuba Centre is a local dive operator based at Cylinder Beach. The centre offers lessons, open dives in the Moreton Bay Marine Park and can provide snorkelling gear too. Kayaks and SUPs can also be rented from Straddie Sales and Rentals . stradbrokeisland.com/tour-item/cylinder-beach northstradbrokeislandsurfschool.com.au

The One Mile Jetty is a public facility in Yabby Street, Dunwich and an easy meeting point for other transport connections, with car parks close by. Its southern side is used by the regular high-speed passenger ferries from Cleveland, with tender access on the north side of the pontoon.

This local town also boasts its own wildlife, with koalas sleeping lazily in the gum trees in the parkland behind the beach, friendly pelicans on the beach and visitors can maybe even spot some dolphins in the channel.

Note that the One Mile Jetty is further north, and around Polka Point, from the docks used by vehicular ferries from Cleveland and Redland Bay. Having prebooked a Maxi Taxi (seats 10-11 pax) through the Stradbroke Taxi Cab service, either join the vehicle at the jetty or walk 500-600m to visit the North Stradbroke Museum on Minjerribah . There, visitors can immerse themselves in the rich Aboriginal and European history of the island, complete with a gallery, studio, shops and a café.
