BRISBANE
The Aboriginal clans of the Jagera and Turrbal peoples have lived along the Brisbane River for more than 40,000 years and still reside in the Brisbane and Moreton Bay areas today. In 1770, then-Lieutenant James Cook sailed past the entrance to Moreton Bay, heading north mapping the coastline. Cook was later followed by Matthew Flinders who in 1799 came into Moreton Bay; however, he also did not find the much-needed freshwater river mouth. Finally, European settlement came later in 1824 with the discovery of the entrance to the Brisbane River by Surveyor-General John Oxley while exploring for new areas to settle north of Sydney for the relocation of convicts. Welcome to B risbane
Brisbane was established initially as a penal colony at Redcliffe in the north but the original jail was later moved to the current CBD location up the river. Civilians arrived in the 1840s when the penal colony was finally closed and land was made available to free settlers. In 1859, Queensland as a state was born and Brisbane became its capital. In 1942, WW2 came to the South Pacific and Brisbane became the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur’s South West Pacific war effort and a key base for many US troops. The Macarthur Building still stands proud in the centre of the city.
Today’s Brisbane is far from its roots and is known as a vibrant and relaxed lifestyle-city built around its endless sunshine, meandering river and the surrounding bush-covered mountains. With a population of close to 2.5 million, new skyscrapers continue to dot the CBD skyline, rising above the inner-city shady parks and gardens. Only a walk bridge away across the river is South Bank, home to Brisbane’s arts and entertainment precinct and packed full of cultural experiences, a diverse range of dining options, seasonal markets, events and festivals. From famous sports grounds to discrete laneways, climbing the Story Bridge high above the river to walking beneath the native forest canopy on a mountain hike, Brisbane offers something for everyone and mostly within easy reach. Enjoy strolling along the many pathways or take a boat trip up the river to really experience the city up close. These attractions and many more are on the doorstep when anchored in the deep water of the Brisbane River.
