Sports and sporting arenas The Brisbane Cricket Ground – popularly known as ‘The Gabba’ from its location in the suburb of Woolloongabba in South Brisbane – is an easy 2km walk from South Bank. First established in 1895 and home to numerous sports teams and events, it seats 42,000. It is primarily a cricket ground in the summer and an AFL football pitch in the winter, the home base for the Brisbane Lions team. Lang Park ( aka Suncorp Stadium ) is in Milton close by the CBD, seats 52,500 and hosts the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League team. Rugby Union games held in Brisbane (local team the ‘Reds’) are played here as well as Rugby Championship international games. Both venues are world-class stadiums and have hosted music concerts for international artists. Australia is a top-ranked tennis nation and in Brisbane its home includes the Pat Rafter Arena, centre court at the Queensland Tennis Centre located in Tennyson. As host of the Brisbane International event held in early January each year, visitors eagerly watch internationally-ranked players warm up before the Australian Open later in the month in Melbourne.
The Royal Queensland Golf Club in Eagle Farm was established in 1920 and is the premier golf course in the state. The Northshore Hamilton recreation hub on the river is on MacArthur Avenue and is the closest drop-off point for guests to access the golf club. Always a popular sport in Australia, horseracing’s main event in Brisbane is the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival taking place between May and June each year, with action at both the Doomben and Eagle Farm racecourses, conveniently located close together in Eagle Farm. Group racing starts in late April with the official carnival starting in May. (Refer to the Gold Coast section of this Guide for the Magic Millions racing event.) Access the racetracks via the river at the Kingsford Smith Drive river hub and stroll up Racecourse Road past the cafés and restaurants to Eagle Farm racecourse.
