GOLD COAST

Coolangatta marks the southern end of the Gold Coast. Coolangatta Beach is home to the first round of the Men’s and Women’s World Surfing Championship held in March/April as part of the World Surf League events. Coolangatta Beach is separated from Greenmount Beach and Rainbow Bay Beach by a small rocky headland but all are located very close together. tinyurl.com/dgc-coolangatta Snapper Rocks is a smallish outcrop of rocks right on the point between Rainbow Bay Beach and Point Danger. It is famous for two things – its consistent surf break producing good clean waves and as the start of the large man-made ‘Superbank’ that extends about 2km past the beaches to the north. The Superbank is known for providing some of the best conditions in the world as surfers can catch waves through to the top end of Coolangatta Beach. What a ride! Watch all the action from the Rainbow Bay Surf Club. There are several surf schools in the area that provide lessons and it’s hard to go past practising on some of the top surfing waves in the world. tinyurl.com/qld-snapper-rocks Coolangatta

Nine Mile Reef is off Tweed Heads sitting in about 10m of water with a drop-off to 30m and some cover from hard and soft corals. Known for its presence of a variety of sharks, divers can also swim with turtles, stingrays and, if lucky. manta rays. Dive tours for Nine Mile Reef are available from several dive companies. Kirra Dives is based at Tweed Heads with only a 30 minute trip to the reef. Gold Coast Dive Adventures departs from Mariners Cove Marina in the Broadwater. Both companies are PADI-certified.

The Gold Coast Airport is only a five minute drive from Coolangatta Beach across the Gold Coast Highway. It operates as both a domestic and international airport offering direct flights across Australia and to destinations in New Zealand and Asia, with one-stop connections to most of Europe and North America.
