St John's Cathedral, Brisbane and the Anzac Legend

The family presented the Cathedral with the crucifix which hangs in the Cathedral Oratory. It was originally sculpted by noted German-born Queensland artist Nickolaus Seffrin for a theatrical production while working at the ABC. But having been given to the Cathedral in memory of Franklin and the Voyager disaster, the crucifix takes on a different symbolism.

The figure of Christ is made from twisted strands of metal and, as you look at the tortured limbs and torso of the crucifix, you can almost sense the crushed metal of the ships as the Voyager and Melbourne collided with terrible force. But while the crucifix evokes great suffering it also foreshadows new life, as symbolically the crucified body of Christ awaits resurrection.
