SOUTHERN GREAT BARRIER REEF

Mon Repos Turtle Centre World-famous Mon Repos Turtle Centre is a must-do when in Bundaberg. The centre is part of the Parks and forests department, located right on the beach and an easy detour from the marina area en route into the city.

Fishing – offshore Some describe the Southern Great Barrier Reef as the pinnacle of Australian angling due to the diversity of the fish species and the range and accessibility of fishing experiences. The Reef is home to amazing species such as coral trout, red emperor, Spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, marlin and sailfish. A number of charter operators with extensive local knowledge of where is best to go on the day offer day trips or longer with If freshwater fishing is preferred, make a visit to some of the local lakes and rivers in and around the Gladstone and Bundaberg area. Lake Awoonga is the place to catch barramundi, with the largest caught weighing in at 36kg! It also is stocked with mangrove jack. Bundaberg’s Lake Monduran also has barramundi where the story goes a world record was broken by someone fishing from a kayak! advance bookings. Fishing – onshore

• Hatching January to April • Turtle Encounters begin in November.

Whale-watching experiences From July to November, it’s humpback whale-watching season on the east coast of Australia. Many locations offer whale-watching experiences as the whales travel up and back down the coast. The whales, however, actually stop at Fraser Island to rest for a couple of weeks with their calves before starting the final trip south. From Bundaberg, whale-watching tours to Fraser Island are available through Lady Musgrave Experience with direct access almost due east across the top of Hervey Bay to the wide waters of Platypus Bay where the whales rest and play.

Bargara If you are looking for a beach

experience, the trendy seaside town of Bargara is less than 20km from the marina (close to the turtles!) and offers walks along The Esplanade, shopping, cafés, parklands and a stunning east coast beach where locals swim all year-round.
