Southern Queensland SUPERYACHT GUIDE

WELCOME TO MORETON BAY

Few large cities have untouched natural cruising grounds immediately on their doorstep but Moreton Bay delivers exactly that to many Brisbane and surrounds residents and visitors. Superyachts come in and out of the Brisbane River and many bypass some of the tucked-away isolated bays on Moreton Island. Offering safe and sheltered anchorages and wide-open clean sandy beaches for swimming and onshore activities, visitors to Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island can also access the east coast surf as, in some spots, it’s only a short climb over a sand hill away. Moreton Bay covers over 1,500 square kilometres but its catchment area is far greater, at over 21,000 sq.km, with many rivers feeding into it, including Pine River in the north and the Brisbane River in the west. Sheltered from the ocean by Bribie Island, Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Bay has relatively calmwaters.

Whether visitors are looking for a relaxing island escape, feeding dolphins at Tangalooma, fishing on an artificial reef, savouring the local fresh produce or just taking in the local natural beauty of the bay, the diversity Moreton Bay offers in this year-round destination is truly amazing.

Moreton Bay plays a central role in this region with its protected wetlands, mudflats and waterways ensuring its ability to support up to 25% of Australia’s bird species and seven species of mangroves. The bay is also home to wildlife, attracting turtles, dolphins, whales and dugongs, and is managed by the Moreton Bay Marine Park .
