Southern Queensland SUPERYACHT GUIDE
LOCATION / TOPIC WELCOME TO THE G LD C AST
The Gold Coast region is the ancestral home to a number of Indigenous clans of the Yugambeh people. In 1770 Lieutenant James Cook sailed up the east coast and noted this coastal region by naming Point Danger and Mount Warning. With European arrival, the region grew in line with state development with the south coast becoming a fashionable recreation destination. A property boom after WW2 led to the name ‘Gold Coast’ being coined and it was formalised in the late 1950s. Today the Gold Coast has an estimated population of over 650,000 residents and as one of Australia’s top tourist cities, it draws over 10 million visitors a year. Its iconic sandy beaches, year-round sun and famed surfing spots continue to be popular attractions as do the luxury hotels and high-rise apartments, theme parks and golf courses, the 250km of inland canal and river systems and the striking hinterland activities of hiking trails and national parks – all overlooking the vibrant colours of the Pacific Ocean. Welcome to the Gold Coast As one of Australia’s top tourism cities, life on the Gold Coast is mainly centred around the water – whether it’s the Pacific Ocean with more than 55km of white sandy coastline comprised of more than 30 different beaches or the residential canals and maze of waterways. The Gold Coast hinterland too is a treasure trove of discovery with 100,000 hectares of World Heritage rainforest right on the doorstep.
