Finn’s Boatshed (aka ‘Husband Daycare’) ~ Volunteers report

‘Mission creep’ is a term familiar to boaties and tradies, the words “oh, while you’re here …” guaranteed to shiver.

It’s been a hell of a ride since I had the bright idea in early 2020 to start a volunteer maintenance program for RQYS, reflects acclaimed Member Noel Paterson, with the focus to assist with the day-to-day upkeep of the floating assets of the Club.

Our motto is, ‘If it doesn’t float, we don’t do it’! So, building sail racks, flotation vest racking, etc, doesn’t exactly meet the criteria but that sort of stuff morphs into our work list. We proudly wear our Finn’s shirts every Thursday and get stuck into it. It is quite staggering with 40 Optis, six Quests, six Elliots, a far East 28, 20-odd RHIBs, two Shark Cats, paddleboards, windsurfers, the Vic Frizell and now the Making Waves Farr 40 The TRIBE to keep us busy. There is also the Sailing Academy storage, RQ Sailing storage, Race Management floating buoy shed, and the Volunteers’ room… We have had many generous donors, some of whom are Club Members who have given us all sorts of tools, machinery and so forth, so we are slowly upgrading our humble array of things to make this all happen. We have an association with Mt Gravatt Men’s shed and they have been extremely helpful to us in that regard: thanks, Don. We all lie about our age and have one Member who was 69 for three years! Suffice to say we range from mid-60s to early-80s.

It was disappointing that we had to cancel our Christmas Party in Las Vegas this year as we couldn’t afford the insurance. We opted for the soup at Eventide instead. We have a weekly rolling list of chores which are added to and rubbed off the container door whiteboard when they are completed. It’s a veritable
