Arriving at Hervey Bay
Sunset behind Urangan Boat Harbour
Hervey Bay is well protected on the eastern side by the northern half of Fraser Island as it extends into the Coral Sea. It also shields the local Urangan Boat Harbour in Hervey Bay. It is here that the entrance to the Great Sandy Strait begins and, as the name suggests, the southern waterway is sandy, tidal and often quite shallow in places. The Great Sandy Strait sits within the Great Sandy Marine Park and runs south between the coast and Fraser Island with a southern exit at Inskip Point, well known by locals for the infamous Wide Bay Bar. The Urangan Boat Harbour is a hub of activity with marinas, outdoor bars and restaurants, and many tour operators offering day trips for whale-watching, fishing and diving tours all thrown in together. There are three marinas in the Urangan Boat Harbour, all tucked in behind the one seawall. The Great Sandy Straits Marina can accommodate vessels up to 30m and has space for day-visit tenders, both by prior arrangement. The Boat Club Hervey Bay can also take vessels up to 30m and has a visitor’s dock, both subject to availability. Fisherman’s Wharf Marina & Shiplifts is the furthest south into the straits and has no berths for superyachts. Fisherman’s Wharf can accommodate >24 m vessels for pre-lift only and this would need to be on a high tide. Diesel fuel is available at The Boat Club Hervey Bay, offering both high and medium-flow.
