The Hervey Bay area and Fraser Island sit within and across marine parks, national parks and biospheres. The Great Sandy Marine Park brochure is an excellent reference tool for marine park zones and other required permits. Great Sandy National Park covers Fraser Island and is part of Parks and Forests, Department of Environment and Science. The Great Sandy Biosphere as designated by UNESCO encompasses the wider Fraser Island, Hervey Bay, Great Sandy Strait and hinterland region and is an important site for conservation both locally and internationally. parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/161150/gsmp-vis-guide.pdf parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/kgari-fraser/attractions greatsandybiosphere.org.au For any size superyacht, there is a designated cruise ship anchorage adjacent to the Kingfisher Bay Resort wharf on Fraser Island. This deepwater anchorage in the Great Sandy Strait provides perfect shelter and easy access to the Kingfisher Bay Resort and direct access to the services and tourism operators based on the island, several of which offer private, tailored tours and activities. msq.qld.gov.au/Boating-maps/Fraser-Coast-guides kingfisherbay.com Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait is included in the Maryborough Pilotage Area . The area is not declared as a compulsory pilotage area (as actual ports are) but it does require a pilot or competent person to be on board when the vessel is underway through the fairway to the cruise anchorage and then again for departure. Local area chartlets are available for reference . Refer to the Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) website for the Port Procedures for Maryborough or contact the local Harbour Master directly to discuss specifics or exemptions from pilotage requirements. msq.qld.gov.au/Shipping/Pilotage-areas msq.qld.gov.au/Shipping/Pilotage-areas/Pa-maryborough msq.qld.gov.au/Shipping/Port-procedures/Port-procedures-maryborough msq.qld.gov.au/About-us/How-to-contact-us/Regions

Coming ashore at Kingfisher Bay Resort Superyachts anchoring in the cruise ship anchorage can dispatch a tender to the Kingfisher Bay Resort wharf to drop off or pick up guests wanting to access Fraser Island. Pre-booking all arrangements is a must. Guests can come ashore to either visit the resort itself and enjoy its services or to commence tour activities arranged through their sister company Fraser Explorer Tours (FET). The resort can arrange for a boat to collect guests from a visiting vessel for the day if required. Note the resort wharf is actively used by the regular car ferry to the island and other vessels.
