Arriving at Mooloolaba

Mooloolaba has a Boat Harbour Controller supporting the local commercial fishing fleet and the many recreational craft. Vessels up to 35m are allowed to enter the Mooloolah River without approval from the Boat Harbour Controller but vessels 35m or greater will require a risk assessment with approval from the Regional Harbour Master in Brisbane. Further restrictions also apply to the draft and beam of the vessel. For vessels too large to come up the river, there is an anchorage outside the river mouth in the bay that is used by cruise ships. Guests can enjoy taking in the wide sweeping view of Mooloolaba Beach local area and can come ashore by tender into the river. msq.qld.gov.au/Waterways/Vessel-size-restrictions-non-trading-ports Mooloolaba (from Point Cartwright) is the start of the pilotage area for large vessels heading south to Brisbane. The variable tide for the Sunshine Coast as published by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is 2.17 metres. msq.qld.gov.au/Tides/King-tides The depth at the river entrance to the Mooloolah River can be limiting and is regularly surveyed and dredged. It was most recently surveyed in November 2020. Located conveniently at the northern end of Parkyn Parade, The Wharf Mooloolooba offers a wide selection of dining outlets, is next door to the Sealife Aquarium and a short 250m walk to the beachfront casual shopping and dining precinct. Beyond the ‘No anchoring’ zone in the Mooloolah River is an area known locally as the ‘Duck Pond’ where vessels are allowed to drop anchor. Restrictions apply on minimum distances from structures. Refer to Beacon to Beacon map for the Sunshine Coast . msq.qld.gov.au/Boating-maps/Sunshine-Coast-guides A couple of public piers along the riverfront offer pick-up and drop-off points by tender, but are limited to only a 15-minute stay. If coming ashore for the day by tender, contact The Wharf Mooloolaba Marina for an available day berth rental. At the far end of Parkyn Parade closest to the breakwater is the Mooloolaba Seafood Precinct where the local fishing fleet is based. It is here larger vessels have been accommodated on a case-by-case basis in the past with advance arrangements in place. Casual rate fees apply.
