MORETON ISLAND SURPRISES

Tangalooma VIP Service The Tangalooma Island Resort recognises the needs of visiting superyachts through the provision of a VIP Service available to vessels and can tailor services for the guests’ and crews’ needs. Services include VIP Resort Access Package, private guided tours, scenic helicopter flights, relaxation massages onboard, private cruises to the wrecks with watersports equipment, and even a private picnic safari. To arrange VIP Services through the Tangalooma Island Resort, please email johnm@tangalooma.com or call +61 (0)7 3637 2158. All services need to be arranged in advance. Mount Tempest Located in the centre of the island, Mount Tempest can be accessed on foot from its eastern slopes, a short 4WD trip from Tangalooma Resort. It is a 2.5km round trip walk from the 4WD Middle Road track and should take about two hours. Quite steep in places, it has steps to assist and some seated areas for rest stops. Once at the top on a clear day it will all be worth it as the view ranges from the Sunshine Coast through to the Gold Coast.

Wild dolphin feeding Dolphin feeding has long been a memorable Tangalooma experience with families returning every year to catch up with ‘their’ dolphins. Each evening at sunset the dolphins come in to shore to be fed by guests who wade out from the beach. Tangalooma’s Dolphin Care Team and Eco-rangers actively manage the program. The dolphin feeding area is a protected Marine Park Zone on the northern side of the wharf. The Sandhills Further south is another protected anchoring opportunity between the Big Sandhills and Little Sandhills. Note that the gently-shelving beach extends further out in front of The Sandhills than any of the other Moreton Island anchoring spots. South of the Little Sandhills, about 2.5km along the foreshore walking track, is Moreton Bay Rock Oysters which farms some of the freshest oysters in Moreton Bay in the shallow waters of Days Gutter. tangalooma.com/dolphin-feeding tinyurl.com/yx9s9eko

Kooringal Kooringal is known as the more chilled-out part of Moreton Island, famous for its fresh seafood straight from the local trawlers. Kooringal carries groceries and other food items through the local General Store. The village is also home to the famous Gutter Bar Restaurant and Bar which stocks the delicious Moreton Bay Rock Oysters grown just to the north.
