Dugongs Dugongs are medium-sized marine mammals and are part of the same species order that includes manatees. Large bays facing north on the Queensland coast provide desirable habitats for dugong, with the most southern being Moreton Bay. Rarely are they seen further south. Moreton Bay is ranked among the top ten dugong habitats in Australia and is the only place in the country where they gather in herds. Dugongs are also strictly herbivorous, making the seagrass growing on the floor of the bay very desirable.
