MORETON BAY

Arriving in Moreton Bay

Moreton Bay extends 125km from Caloundra and the tip of Bribie Island on the Sunshine Coast in the north to the Gold Coast Seaway in the south. The bay has three distinct areas: broader expanses of open water in the north, its mid-section gradually contracting to waterways clustered with pretty islands and, from the Jumpinpin Bar south, the mangrove-lined channels and sandy beaches of the northern Gold Coast.

The bay spans 35km at its widest point and is home to around 360 islands, many as sandy islets, the main ones for visitors being Moreton Island and North Stradbroke. The entrance to Moreton Bay is scattered with numerous sandbanks supplied by the ongoing drift of sand along the coastline. Between Tangalooma and Skirmish Point on Bribie Island are the Middle Banks, Central Banks and Western Banks. From north of Moreton Island towards Caloundra are the Yule Road, Spitfire Bank, and the Salamander Bank, amongst others. Refer to Beacon to Beacon maps for Moreton Bay . msq.qld.gov.au/Boating-maps/Moreton-Bay-guides The Amity Banks are located just west of Amity Point, while the Moreton Banks lie to the west of the southern tip of Moreton Island. These banks can be challenging for marine navigation as they constantly change due to tidal currents. Refer to Beacon to Beacon maps for Southern Moreton Bay . Local knowledge experts on the waters in this area can be arranged ahead of time to join a vessel for the day. msq.qld.gov.au/Boating-maps/Moreton-Bay-guides The tidal range in the bay area is moderate at 1.5–2m in range. The average depth is 6.8m with many parts of the bay deeper at over 30m. Consult the MSQ Tides website page for more information for specific locations’ tidal details found under Tidal Planes referring to the Brisbane Bar and Moreton Bay. msq.qld.gov.au/Tides
