Arriving in Brisbane
The Brisbane River is the longest river in Southeast Queensland and empties into Moreton Bay. It travels close to 350km from Mount Stanley and is dammed in the Brisbane Valley; Lake Wivenhoe supplies most of Brisbane’s water. Historically, the Brisbane River played an important role in carrying goods and services up to inland townships and down to the port for shipping before the railway arrived. Arrival into Brisbane is through Moreton Bay and the mouth of the Brisbane River, passing the Port of Brisbane on the reclaimed and extended Fisherman Islands to the east. The Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) manages the dredging in the area and the shipping channel is maintained to ensure access for all commercial vessels. Refer to the Brisbane Port Procedures and Information for Shipping for more details, including a reference table on air drafts and bridge heights on the Brisbane River. msq.qld.gov.au/Shipping/Port-procedures/Port-procedures-brisbane The Brisbane Pilotage Area is a compulsory pilotage area commencing from the Maroochy River in the north on the Sunshine Coast through into Moreton Bay and south to Russell Island where the Southport Pilotage Area takes over. Refer to the Brisbane area pilotage chartlet . All vessels 50m or more proceeding within a Queensland compulsory pilotage area must either carry a licensed marine pilot or be under the command of a master who holds a Pilotage Exemption Certificate for the area. Queensland has relatively large and variable tidal ranges with Brisbane at 2.73m, with height above LAT at 3.1m. Refer to MSQ Tides for Brisbane Tide Tables and further information on Brisbane River-specific tides. msq.qld.gov.au/Tides Refit and repair services Brisbane is one of Queensland’s key superyacht service hubs and has several large professional refit and repair yards based on the river, with years of experience in servicing and managing large projects for the superyacht fleet.
