ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES

Outdoor climbs Two unique outdoor activities along the Brisbane River are climbing the Story Bridge and the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. Opened in 1940 and linking the CBD with Kangaroo Point, the Story Bridge is one of only three bridges in the world people can climb. Once up top, climbers experience one of the best views of Brisbane and far beyond and have options to ‘Walk the Plank’, ‘Cantilever Lean Out’ or ‘Abseil Down’. The Kangaroo Point Cliffs are Heritage-listed cliffs along the riverfront opposite the CBD. The cliff faces were created through the mining of the volcanic rock which forced the river’s sharp bends here. A quarry was established as early as 1826 to remove rocks for a variety of purposes which included building retaining walls along river reaches, ballast for sailing vessels and as foundations for some city buildings. storybridgeadventureclimb.com.au

Now a visitor attraction, the cliffs can be climbed through booking with a local tour operator providing the correct safety gear and instruction. There is also a pedestrian walkway at the eastern end of the cliffs and, with 107 steps, most visitors opt to walk down from the top to the parkland below. Access to the walk is through the local café.
