Arts and entertainment South Bank is the heart of the arts and entertainment sector in Brisbane. It houses both the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and the Queensland Art Gallery, now collectively known as QAGOMA . Both galleries feature visiting exhibitions and also many permanent displays including Indigenous Australian art collections, in particular the Namatjira Story . Most exhibitions are free to the public. QAGOMA also is home to the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art held every three years featuring a diverse range of artworks from leading contemporary artists from Asia, the South Pacific islands, New Zealand and Australia.

The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is also at South Bank housing a playhouse, theatres and a concert hall. Hosting international ballet companies including La Scala and the Royal Ballet as part of their international series of performances, QPAC also features live theatre including musicals, children’s and family entertainment, opera, comedy and classical music recitals. qpac.com.au Beyond South Bank, other artistic centres in Brisbane include Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm (on the river) which is both a distinct landmark as a pre-war industrial building and more recently as an art hub for creativity and cultural innovation. Visitors tend to go early for sundowners at the open air bar overlooking the river. Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) in Kangaroo Point feature productions from artists from different cultural backgrounds. The Judith Wright Contemporary Art Centre (JWAC) in Fortitude Valley is a creative space for performing arts with a vibrant list of artistic groups as tenants. The Queensland Ballet is based in Brisbane and operates from three centres. It is the hub for dance in the state engaging renown choreographers and designers from around the world including talented ex-dancer Li Cunxin ao as the current Artistic Director since 2013. queenslandballet.com.au queenslandballet.com.au/company/team/ artistic-director Brisbane Festival is Australia’s leading international arts festival held each year in September over three weeks, delivering a highly curated multi-arts program. The festival showcases performances of classical and contemporary music, dance, theatre, opera and circus using the river and iconic city landmarks as stages.
